A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
