Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important political figure stated the incident left him without words and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
