Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
