Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
