Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his first championship for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a torrid year, winning just one win at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in specific - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-term mentor Cervara.

Currently working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested competitive victory over Frenchman Moutet.

It is the player's initial championship after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court from March of that year.

Success also means he has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct events.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters at once, so to get a title is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the maiden victory I won when my child her name was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching strategy and frequent emotional displays on court had prompted observers to wonder if his ability to play at the elite level was concluded.

However the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serving game.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, securing four of the final five points to go ahead.

The competitors swapped break points in the following set before the Frenchman, bidding for his maiden tour victory, seized the initiative to create a third set.

Moutet saved four early opportunities in a tight final set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev secured the win with a point at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
