An underground economy for unapproved slimming medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at residence.
Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Item Details and Pricing
Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly significant health risks”.
